GET THINGS SORTED

Are you somewhere between age 11 and 17 and in secondary school? Are you even turning 18 with another two or so years to go before you finish?

If you’re in the above categories, the next question we have for you is, how well do you have things sorted?  Education, career and life are the three very essential areas which you need to plan towards and in which you need to get things right.  They come in order of priority.  Once you have education and career sorted then that will be the time to move on, fully prepared, to take on all the challenges of life including relationships, friendships, sex, religion, politics, health, success, failure, marriage, family…. the works.

But, let’s get it straight, there’s no clear distinction and sometimes these three important areas get a little bit muddled and mixed up, with blurred lines.

And whereas sex and school in previous times were just not a good match, there is more sex in school now than there ever was.  Uhh?

We don’t mean that everyone’s doing it, but that there are now more, open, healthy, informative classroom discussions on the subject to help you to put things into perspective.

We also know, however, that life happens and continues to happen for all students at whatever age so blurring will occur making this open and informative approach more necessary than ever.

Studies show that early sexual activity, combined with a lack of relevant information, services, and skills to avoid risky situations, continue to place young people like you at risk.  At risk of what, you may ask? Well, there’s unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, other threats such as violence (including physical and sexual abuse), exploitation, substance abuse and more too such as legal implications if you are below the age of consent.

The message we want to convey is – if the lines are becoming blurred for you, if you are being lured by yours or someone else’s feelings, “the best way to do it is not at all”.  As a student stay focused until you have gained some amount of knowledge, maturity and direction for your life to deal with the additional mind-confusing situations which this added complication will bring.

As a student your first obligation is to study. The second is to choose a career path which suits you, your interests, skills and personality. That’s an obligation, not only to yourself, your ambitions and goals but also to your parents, guardians, teachers and those others who are responsible for your development and progress to independence, adulthood and success in life. Most of your waking moment should be focused on what you want out of these first two aspects of your life, career and education.

But our heads are not buried in the sand.  We also live in the real world and do know that statistics reveal that young persons are engaging in sexual activity (even early, even in school and even right under teachers’ noses) and – so if you find yourself in that situation, make sure it’s not risky sex that you’re having.  Protection is the key.

We still say, however, stay focused on education and career and prepare to make life happen in a way which you control.

CHOICES is making big plans for the future to help you more than ever before. You also need to make a big plan for yourself.

Life is about learning and fortunately it is not a one-chance only situation.  If you can get it right the first time, then you’re ahead of the game.  If you’re having a problem in any area of education, career or life, seek the help of a teacher, counsellor, pastor or wise friend to help you through.

Don’t blow it!
